Don’t!
I was watching Tru TV and they had a show on about people who do dangerous jobs. This show featured a process server named Byron. Byron had the unhappy job of delivering legal papers to people. All of these people seemed to misunderstand Byron’s role as a process server. They all got very angry at him and some assaulted him, throwing things at him or his vehicle. It was crazy. This one lady and her family owned a restaurant that was getting sued and smiles turned to white hot rage when she realized why he was there. She and her daughter started yelling, cursing and throwing things at Byron – dishes, pots, etc.
Professional process servers, like lawyers, are “hired guns.” That is, they are not personally invested in the outcome of the case. For the process server, their job is just to tell you that you need to go to court. More often than not, they don’t even know the parties personally. They are just hired to deliver the papers.
As for lawyers, we are naturally more involved and hope to resolve the case in our clients’ favors, but ultimately, it’s about making a living. That is not to say that we don’t have feelings or that there is never any appeal to our sense of justice. Advocacy is our job, and we have to do it professionally.
Don’t shoot the messenger. Most of the time, they have no stake in the outcome and don’t know the details of the situation.
Be especially wary if you see one followed by a video camera!
